COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Education (Indigenous Teacher Education) Primary/Junior program is a five-year degree designed for students pursuing a career in teaching at the primary and junior levels. Students must maintain a cumulative average of 65% overall and a minimum of 70% in Indigenous Teacher Education major courses to continue in the program. The curriculum emphasizes courses relevant to Indigenous languages and learning, with recommendations for electives in subjects commonly taught in elementary schools. In the first year, students take foundational courses including Education 1410 and 2110, English, Indigenous Learning 1100, and Indigenous language courses such as Cree or Ojibwe, along with General Science 1000. The second year includes Education courses 2130, 2150, and 3131, English or Indigenous Learning electives, and additional electives preferably related to elementary education. The third year deepens educational theory and practice with courses like Education 3130, 3150, 3110, and 4395, alongside Indigenous Learning 3010 and 3012, plus further electives in relevant subjects. In the fourth year, students complete advanced Education courses such as 4350, 4351, 4353, 4373, 4398, and various practicum components. The final year includes Education 4079, 4370, 4374, 4375, and 4498, with additional practicum and seminar courses, culminating in Education 4001, which is a full course equivalent. This comprehensive program integrates Indigenous perspectives and language instruction to prepare graduates for effective teaching careers, with a focus on serving Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in Ontario’s elementary schools.
