COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology program is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of social relationships and issues through a carefully designed curriculum over four years. In the first year, students begin with Sociology 1100, supplemented by two FCEs from Type A courses, one FCE from Type B courses, and an elective, establishing a broad foundation in social sciences. The second year deepens this foundation with core courses Sociology 2111 and 2911, alongside two additional Sociology FCEs and two electives, allowing students to explore sociological theories and methods in greater depth. In the third year, the program focuses on advanced topics with required courses Sociology 3311 and 3312, and a choice between Sociology 3410 or 3411, as well as Sociology 2755 or 3818, further specializing students’ knowledge. Students also complete one and a half FCEs in Sociology and an equal number of electives, enabling academic flexibility. The fourth year culminates with Sociology 4313 and a choice between Sociology 4411 or 4033, alongside half-course Sociology electives at the upper level, ensuring mastery of key concepts. A significant component is the Honours Thesis Seminar (Sociology 4305), providing a capstone research experience where students synthesize their learning and contribute original research to the field. Two additional electives complete the program, rounding out students’ education and preparing them for diverse careers or graduate studies by equipping them with critical thinking, research, and analytical skills essential for understanding complex social dynamics.
