COURSE CURRICULUM

The Gender and Women’s Studies program at Lakehead University is structured to provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education across four years. In the first year, students take Gender and Women’s Studies 1100 alongside one FCE each from Type A and Type B courses, with an additional FCE from either Type A or Type B depending on how Gender and Women’s Studies 1100 is classified, plus one elective FCE. The Indigenous Content Requirement can be fulfilled by taking Gender and Women’s Studies 2119 or, if it is not offered, a half FCE elective from the Type E course list. In the second year, students complete one FCE in Gender and Women’s Studies core courses and one FCE from Group 1 courses, along with two and a half FCEs in electives. The Indigenous Content Requirement is again addressed by Gender and Women’s Studies 2119 when available, or a half FCE from Type E courses. During the third year, students focus on Gender and Women’s Studies 3030, plus one and a half FCEs each in core courses and Group 1 courses, alongside one and a half FCEs in electives. The fourth year involves one FCE in core courses and two FCEs from Group 1 or Group 2 courses at the third or fourth year level, as well as two FCE electives. This curriculum allows students to develop a deep understanding of gender and women’s issues through a blend of core, group, and elective courses, preparing them for further academic pursuits or diverse career paths.
