COURSE CURRICULUM

The English program at Lakehead University offers a structured yet flexible curriculum designed to build strong analytical, writing, and critical thinking skills through the study of literature, language, and culture. In the first year, students begin with English 1115 and one additional half-course in English at the first-year level, along with one full course equivalent (FCE) from Type A courses (excluding English), two FCEs from Type B courses, and one elective FCE. Students considering graduate studies are encouraged to include language courses in their selection. In the second year, students delve deeper into literary analysis through core courses English 2250, 2251, and 2913, supported by one and a half FCEs in second-year English and two electives outside of English. The third year focuses on more specialized and advanced literary topics, requiring two and a half FCEs in English at the third-year level, an additional half-course in English (excluding English 1012 and 1807), one FCE elective that may include English (again excluding 1012 and 1807), and one FCE elective outside English. In the final year, students complete one and a half FCEs in English at the fourth-year level, one and a half FCEs in English at the third- or fourth-year level, and two electives, which may include advanced English courses. This progression ensures that students gain a comprehensive understanding of English literature and criticism while retaining the flexibility to explore other academic interests, preparing them for diverse career paths or further academic pursuits such as graduate studies.
