COURSE CURRICULUM

The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture Diploma at KPU requires the successful completion of 86 credits with a minimum grade of 'C' in all courses. This comprehensive six-term program integrates both Eastern and Western medical knowledge, preparing students for professional practice and licensure. In Term 1, students are introduced to foundational acupuncture theory, biomedical science, university-level writing, and Mandarin language basics, laying the groundwork for effective communication and theoretical understanding. Term 2 deepens the focus with courses in diagnostic data collection, meridian and acupoint systems, biochemistry, microbiology, and East Asian health philosophy. In Term 3, the curriculum introduces classical TCM texts, pattern recognition in diagnosis, acupuncture techniques, therapy, and pathology. Term 4 shifts towards applied practice, emphasizing therapeutic methods, communication and ethics, Western medical diagnostics, pharmacology, and a supervised practicum. Term 5 builds advanced knowledge through training in Taiji/Qigong, case studies, Tuina (Chinese massage), and a second supervised practicum. Finally, Term 6 prepares students for clinical transition with courses in musculoskeletal management, practice transitions, professional regulation, TCM nutrition (Shiliao), and an independent practicum. The program’s structure emphasizes both theoretical and clinical competence, providing students with critical skills for safe, ethical, and effective acupuncture practice. Graduates are equipped for licensure exams (pending additional 60 university credits) and entry into professional TCM practice in British Columbia.
