COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diploma in Horticulture Technology requires students to complete a minimum of 60 credits, with a focus on both core horticulture courses and specialized study. Students should have a basic familiarity with computer applications such as word processing and spreadsheets; those needing to improve these skills are advised to take CBSY 1105. Careful course selection in Year 1 is essential to meet Year 2 prerequisites, and academic advising is available to support students in planning their studies. The core curriculum in the first year includes foundational courses such as Botany for Horticulture, Soils and Growing Media, Basic Machinery Operation and Maintenance, Introduction to Plant Materials, and Foundations of Plant Health. Additionally, students must choose between professional communication or university writing courses to enhance their academic skills. In the second year, students complete mandatory work experience components, including a Horticulture Work Experience course and a related report, which provide practical, hands-on industry exposure. They must also select a business or management course relevant to horticulture, such as Introductory Financial Accounting, Business Management in Horticulture, or Essentials of Management. Alongside these core requirements, students dedicate credits to one of three specialization areas: Landscape Horticulture Systems, Sustainable Production Horticulture, or Turf Management, ensuring a focused and tailored educational experience. The combination of academic knowledge, practical work experience, and specialized study prepares graduates for successful careers in various horticultural fields.
