COURSE CURRICULUM

The Welding program at KPU follows the British Columbia Provincial modular training standards, ensuring consistency with other training providers across the province. The curriculum is carefully designed to combine both welding theory and practical skills, with a strong emphasis on hands-on shop experience as the foundation for skill development. This approach ensures that students gain the technical proficiency needed to succeed in the welding industry. The program also recognizes prior learning; students with previous welding experience or theoretical knowledge may receive credit or advancement, allowing them to progress more quickly through the courses.To successfully complete the program, students must achieve a minimum grade of B- in all required courses. The program consists of 27 credits and includes a variety of specialized welding courses. These courses cover essential topics such as worksite safety and orientation, oxy fuel welding and cutting, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and air arc and plasma arc cutting. Additionally, students learn advanced welding techniques like advanced shielded metal arc welding and advanced semi-automated welding. Other important components include material handling, reading technical drawings, basic metallurgy, and operating stationary shop equipment.This comprehensive curriculum ensures that graduates are well-prepared to enter the welding workforce with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, meeting industry standards and expectations. The program’s structure supports skill development, safety awareness, and technical competency, all critical for a successful career in welding.
