COURSE CURRICULUM

The Engineering First-Year certificate at KPU requires students to complete 40 university-level credits over two semesters, covering foundational courses essential for engineering studies. In the first semester, students take courses such as Introduction to Engineering, Engineering Graphics, Chemistry for Engineering, Principles of Program Structure and Design I, Introduction to University Writing, Differential Calculus, and Physics for Physical and Applied Sciences I. This semester includes 21 credits designed to provide a strong base in mathematics, physics, chemistry, programming, and communication skills. In the second semester, students continue with Introduction to Microcontrollers, Matrix Algebra for Engineers, Integral Calculus, Mechanics I, and Physics for Physical and Applied Sciences II, along with a complementary studies elective, totaling 19 credits. These courses build on first-semester material to deepen students’ understanding of engineering principles and prepare them for advanced study. Students must complete the program within two semesters to maintain their standing in the Engineering First-Year program. Those unable to meet this requirement will be reclassified as undeclared students within the Faculty of Science. This program offers an important pathway for students planning to transfer to second-year engineering programs at institutions like UBC, UVic, or SFU, ensuring they have the necessary background in core technical subjects. Completion of this program, coupled with a sufficiently high GPA, can guarantee eligibility for transfer to these universities’ engineering programs, subject to specific transfer requirements. The Engineering First-Year certificate is a rigorous and focused start for students committed to pursuing a career in engineering.
