COURSE CURRICULUM

The Certificate in Criminology requires students to complete 30 credits of coursework, divided into three groups to provide a well-rounded foundation in the field. Group A consists of core introductory courses that cover the basics of criminology, the criminal justice system, Canadian legal systems, psychology, and sociology. Specifically, students must take CRIM 1100 (Introduction to Criminology), CRIM 1101 (Introduction to the Criminal Justice System), CRIM 1107 (Canadian Legal Systems), PSYC 1100 (Introduction to Psychology: Basic Processes), and SOCI 1125 (Introduction to Society: Processes and Structures), totaling 15 credits. Group B focuses on specialized criminology topics, where students choose three courses totaling 9 credits. These electives include courses such as Introduction to Criminal Law, Methods of Research in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Psychology, Crime and the Media, Introduction to Policing, Corrections Theory and Practice, and Youth Justice. This selection allows students to tailor their learning toward specific areas of interest within criminology and criminal justice. Group C requires students to broaden their academic experience by selecting two undergraduate courses (6 credits) from disciplines outside criminology, encouraging interdisciplinary learning and enhancing critical thinking skills. Altogether, this structure ensures students gain essential knowledge and skills across criminology and related fields, preparing them for further studies or entry-level positions in criminal justice agencies. This balanced approach equips students with both theoretical understanding and practical insights necessary for careers or further academic pursuits in criminology.
