COURSE CURRICULUM

The Accounting Certificate program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) requires the successful completion of 30 credits, offering a strong foundation in accounting principles and practices. Students begin by selecting one of two introductory financial accounting pathways: either the two-course sequence of ACCT 1110 and ACCT 1210, or the accelerated single-course option ACCT 2293. The program also includes essential accounting topics such as ACCT 2235 (Introductory Taxation), ACCT 3310 (Intermediate Financial Accounting I), ACCT 3320 (Cost and Management Accounting I), ACCT 3380 (Managerial Finance), and ACCT 3410 (Intermediate Financial Accounting II). These core courses are designed to prepare students for real-world applications in bookkeeping, financial reporting, and cost management. In addition, students take CBSY 2306, which focuses on accounting systems and advanced reporting applications, offering valuable technical skills in financial software and data handling. Communication is also emphasized through CMNS 1140 (Introduction to Professional Communication), helping students build the written and verbal communication skills needed in the workplace. Finally, students complete one quantitative course from a selection that includes BUQU 1130 (Business Mathematics), or one of several calculus options: MATH 1120, MATH 1130, or MATH 1140. These math courses strengthen analytical skills essential for accounting tasks. The certificate program’s structure ensures students gain comprehensive exposure to the key areas of accounting, while remaining aligned with the requirements for advanced studies such as the Accounting Diploma, BBA in Accounting, or CPA pathway. This makes the certificate ideal for those entering the workforce or seeking further education in the field.
