COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology Major requires students to complete a minimum of 132 credits, including specific core courses and electives. Students must complete ENGL 1100 plus an additional 3 credits of writing-intensive courses. The program mandates 120 credits from courses at the 1100 level or higher, with at least 45 credits at the 3000 level or above, including 9 credits at the 4000 level. Students must also complete 18 credits of breadth electives, with at least 12 credits from courses outside the Faculty of Science, and up to 6 credits from science courses not including BIOL, CHEM, MATH, or PHYS. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required, and at least 50% of all courses and 66% of upper-level courses must be completed at KPU. The first year covers foundational courses such as Introductory Biology I and II, Chemistry, Calculus, Physics, and English writing. The second year focuses on genetics, cell biology, ecology, organic chemistry, and statistics, along with electives. In the third year, students study evolutionary biology, life science research methods, and specialized courses like zoology, biology of plants, molecular genetics, and advanced cell biology, while completing upper-level biology electives and additional electives. The fourth year includes courses such as conservation biology, marine biology, animal physiology, and developmental biology. Students also undertake special topics or research projects to deepen their expertise. Some courses are offered only once a year, so careful academic planning with an advisor is recommended to ensure timely completion.
