COURSE CURRICULUM

Bachelor of Arts degree with a Journalism major at KPU must complete all requirements outlined in the Bachelor of Arts Framework alongside their major-specific courses. The Journalism major requires a total of 54 credits, divided between foundational and advanced courses. At the 1000 and 2000 level, students take core courses including Introduction to Indigenous Studies (INDG 1100), Introduction to Journalism (JRNL 1160), Citizen Journalism (JRNL 1220), Storytelling: Writing for Journalism (JRNL 2120), Multimedia Storytelling (JRNL 2230), Beyond the News: Feature Writing (JRNL 2240), and Media Ethics and Law (COMM 2100). Additionally, students select 3 credits from Communication courses numbered 1100 to 2999. At the 3000 and 4000 level, the major includes Data Visualization (JRNL 3165) and requires students to complete 21 credits from Journalism courses numbered 3000 through 4999. Furthermore, 6 credits must be selected from Communications courses numbered 3000 through 4999. This comprehensive curriculum blends practical skills in storytelling, multimedia production, and ethical considerations with advanced studies in data visualization and communication, preparing students for diverse careers in journalism and related fields. The integration of Indigenous studies and communication courses also broadens students’ understanding of media’s role in society. Overall, the program ensures that graduates possess strong research, writing, and technical skills essential for success in today’s dynamic media environment.
