COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Horticulture Science Urban Ecosystems Major requires a minimum of 121 credits from courses at the 1100 level or higher, including 39 credits at the 3000 level or above, with 6 credits from 4000-level research courses. Additionally, students must complete at least 15 credits of breadth electives outside the HORT field, including 3 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level. The program’s curriculum spans four years, beginning with foundational courses such as Introduction to University Writing, Botany for Horticulture, Soils and Growing Media, and Sustainable Horticulture, along with essential business applications and plant health principles. In the second year, students build knowledge in biology, environmental chemistry, and gain practical horticulture work experience, while choosing from management, accounting, and pest management electives. The third year focuses on applied urban ecosystem topics like Urban Watershed Planning, Monitoring and Assessment of Plant Communities, Urban Agriculture, and Landscape and Environment studies, supplemented with higher-level HORT electives and breadth courses. In the final year, students delve into advanced subjects such as Riparian Management, Urban Ecology, Vegetation Management, and Society and Horticulture, while conducting a two-part Applied Research Project. Students also complete breadth electives to broaden their academic experience. This program integrates interdisciplinary study with applied learning to prepare graduates for innovative and sustainable solutions in urban ecosystem management and horticulture, emphasizing ecological restoration, community engagement, and professional development in the field.
