COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts, Major in Sociology at KPU requires students to complete 54 credits in sociology courses in addition to meeting the general Bachelor of Arts framework. The curriculum begins with foundational studies at the 1000 level, including SOCI 1125, which introduces students to the structures and processes shaping society. At the 2000 level, students explore key areas such as Canadian society (SOCI 2225), classical sociological theories (SOCI 2235), research methods (SOCI 2260), and statistical analysis in social research (SOCI 2365), along with an additional 9 credits from other 2000-level sociology courses to deepen their understanding of sociological inquiry. As students progress to the 3000 and 4000 levels, they must complete either SOCI 3235 (Classic Sociological Theories) or SOCI 3330 (Contemporary Sociological Theories), and either SOCI 3260 (Qualitative Research Methods) or SOCI 3365 (Quantitative Research Methods), which strengthen students’ ability to critically analyze data and develop independent research. For the capstone requirement, students choose between two experiential learning options: Option A includes SOCI 4325 or SOCI 4330, both of which involve community service components; Option B consists of SOCI 4225 and SOCI 4320, which focus on advanced topics in Canadian and global sociological issues. Additionally, students complete 18 credits from upper-level sociology courses (3000 or higher), allowing them to specialize in areas of interest. This major emphasizes theoretical knowledge, practical research skills, and real-world engagement, preparing graduates for careers in research, public service, education, advocacy, and more.
