COURSE CURRICULUM

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English at KPU must complete all requirements outlined in the Bachelor of Arts Framework alongside their major-specific courses. The program’s curriculum begins with foundational writing skills, including ENGL 1100, Introduction to University Writing, and a 1200-level English course, providing students with essential academic writing and critical reading skills. At the 2000 level, students take ENGL 2250, Approaches to Literary Study, along with six additional credits of literature courses, deepening their understanding of literary analysis. The 3000-level courses offer a range of specialized topics where students select from areas such as Medieval Literature, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Renaissance Drama and Literature, Canadian and American literature before 1900, 18th-century British literature, Romantic and Victorian literature, multicultural Canadian literature, race and American literature, postcolonial literature, women writers, literature and the environment, and Indigenous literature. This variety allows students to explore diverse historical periods, genres, and cultural perspectives. At the 4000 level, students must complete six credits of advanced English courses or combine three credits of English with ARTS 4800, focusing on specialized research or interdisciplinary study. Overall, students must accumulate at least 51 credits, with a minimum of 21 credits at the 3000 or 4000 levels, ensuring a comprehensive and in-depth study of English literature. This structure supports the development of critical thinking, literary analysis, and advanced communication skills essential for success in academic and professional fields.
