COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology at KPU requires students to fulfill both the general Bachelor of Arts framework and specific major requirements totaling 72 credits. At the 1000 level, foundational courses include Introduction to Criminology, Criminal Justice System, Canadian Legal Systems, Criminal Law, Research Methods, and Interpersonal Development, alongside introductory Psychology and Sociology courses. Philosophy courses such as Critical Thinking or Introduction to Moral Philosophy are also required. The 2000-level coursework builds on this foundation with classes in Quantitative Data Analysis, Psychological and Sociological Explanations of Criminal Behavior, Canadian Criminal Justice Administration, and elective courses like Policing, Crime and Media, Corrections, and Youth Justice. At the 3000 and 4000 levels, students engage in advanced studies including Qualitative Research Methods and select courses across three groups: Theory and Methods (such as Advanced Theories of Crime and Critical Criminology), Criminal Justice (including Community Corrections and Policy Evaluation), and Law, Advocacy, and Conflict Resolution (such as Law and Society and Philosophy of Law). Additionally, students must complete 15 more credits of upper-level criminology courses to deepen their expertise. This comprehensive curriculum ensures that graduates develop a thorough understanding of crime, justice systems, and social issues, combined with strong analytical, research, and practical skills, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, law, or further academic study.
