COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing major at KPU requires students to complete all the Bachelor of Arts Framework requirements in addition to their major-specific courses, with a note that minimum grades higher than a C may be required, so students should check prerequisites carefully. The program includes foundational courses such as Introduction to Creative Writing and Introduction to Craft and Process in Creative Writing, each worth 3 credits, alongside specialized courses like The Business of Writing and Writers’ Studio. Students must also complete university writing courses including Introduction to University Writing and an additional 3-credit English course at the 1200 level. A selection of courses covering new media, fiction, poetry, and special topics allows students to explore different creative formats and narrative techniques. For advanced study, students choose one of several 3000- or 4000-level workshops focusing on fiction, poetry, screenwriting, creative nonfiction, or new forms and media. In total, students must complete 54 credits within the Creative Writing program, including at least 24 credits at the 3000-level or higher, with a minimum of 3 credits from 4000-level courses. This curriculum structure provides a comprehensive balance of foundational knowledge, hands-on practice, and advanced workshops to develop creative writing skills, critical thinking, and a professional understanding of the writing industry. Graduates are well-prepared to pursue careers in writing, publishing, media, and other related fields, equipped with strong creative and communication abilities.
