COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts Major in Asian Studies requires students to fulfill all the general Bachelor of Arts Framework requirements alongside their major-specific courses. For the Asian Studies major, students must complete a total of 60 credits. This includes 18 credits of lower-level Asian Studies courses, with at least 12 of those credits at the 2000-level to build a solid foundation in the discipline. Additionally, students must complete 30 credits of upper-level Asian Studies courses, which should include a minimum of 6 credits at the 4000-level. Among these upper-level courses, students are required to take a capstone course, ASIA 4350, titled Asian Communities in Canada: Research Approaches, which serves to integrate their learning and prepare them for advanced research or professional work. Furthermore, the program includes a language requirement where students must complete at least 12 credits in a single approved Asian language such as Japanese (JAPN), Mandarin (MAND), or Punjabi (PUNJ). This language proficiency component is designed to deepen cultural understanding and enhance communication skills essential for engaging with Asian communities and contexts. Together, these curricular requirements provide a comprehensive education in Asian Studies, combining cultural, historical, social, and linguistic knowledge to prepare graduates for diverse careers or further academic study related to Asia and its global connections.
