COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts, Major in Applied Geography at KPU requires students to complete 52 credits within the major, in addition to meeting the broader Bachelor of Arts degree framework. The program begins in Year 1 with foundational courses in Human Geography (GEOG 1101) and Physical Geography (GEOG 1102), totaling 7 credits. In Year 2, students expand their analytical capabilities through courses such as The City (GEOG 2250), Qualitative Methods in Geography (GEOG 2380), Quantitative Methods (GEOG 2390), and Introduction to GIS (GEOG 2400). They also select one course from Climatology (GEOG 2310) or Geomorphology (GEOG 2320), and one regional geography course from options including the Geography of British Columbia, Canada, East Asia, or South Asia. This year totals 18 credits and builds strong methodological and regional understanding. Year 3 focuses on applied and theoretical learning with courses like Economic Geography (GEOG 3120), Society and Urban Space (GEOG 3130), Urban Planning and Politics (GEOG 3220), Geographic Thought (GEOG 3260), Natural Hazards (GEOG 3310), and Environment and Resources (GEOG 3320), for another 18 credits. In the final year, students synthesize their learning through advanced coursework in Research Design in Geography (GEOG 4100), Applications in GIS (GEOG 4380), and Current Geographic Issues (GEOG 4501), totaling 9 credits.
