COURSE CURRICULUM

The graduate certificate program in Victimology is delivered over two semesters and is primarily offered in a hybrid format, combining online learning with in-person engagement to offer flexibility and depth. In Semester 1, students are introduced to foundational topics such as Victimology and Criminal Justice Responses in Canada (VICT 5000), which explores systemic responses to victimization. Victimization and Trauma (VICT 5001) examines the psychological and social impacts of crime, while Diversity and Marginalization in Victimology (VICT 5002) focuses on how intersecting identities affect victim experiences. Ethical Decision Making: Victims' Rights and Social Justice (VICT 5003) addresses legal and moral responsibilities in victim services. Courses like Approaches to Victim Intervention (VICT 5004), Trauma-Informed Program Development and Implementation (VICT 5005), and Professional Resilience (VICT 5006) provide practical tools for supporting victims and maintaining personal well-being in high-stress roles. In Semester 2, the program deepens this learning with Grant Proposal Writing, Research, and Fundraising Strategies (VICT 5500), essential for those working in non-profit and community-based services. Students explore contemporary issues through Digital Victimization: Media and Online Platforms (VICT 5501), Victimization: Children and Youth (VICT 5502), and Violence and Victimization: Perspectives on Gender and Sexual Diversity (VICT 5503). Additional courses such as Victims at the Global Crossroads: Justice and Advocacy (VICT 5504) and Indigenous Peoples and the Criminal Justice System (VICT 5505) broaden students' perspectives on international and historical contexts. The Capstone Project (VICT 5506) allows students to apply their knowledge in a practical setting, preparing them for impactful careers in victim services and advocacy.
