COURSE CURRICULUM

The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) graduate certificate program is structured over two semesters, combining in-person and hybrid courses to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching experience. In Semester 1, students start with The Adult ESL Learner (TESL 5001), which focuses on understanding the unique needs of adult language learners. Introduction to Language 1 (TESL 5002) and Methodology 1 (TESL 5003) lay the foundation for language structure and teaching methods. Planning and Assessment 1 (TESL 5005) teaches how to design effective lesson plans and evaluate learner progress. Professional Practicum I (TESL 5006) and Teaching with Technology 1 (TESL 5010), both delivered in a hybrid format, provide hands-on teaching experience and introduce technology tools for ESL instruction. In Semester 2, students continue with Introduction to Language 2 (TESL 5012) and Methodology 2 (TESL 5013), deepening their linguistic and pedagogical skills. Pedagogical Grammar (TESL 5014) focuses on grammar instruction tailored to ESL learners, while Planning and Assessment 2 (TESL 5015) expands on learner evaluation techniques. Professional Practicum II (TESL 5016) offers further practical teaching opportunities, and Teaching with Technology 2 (TESL 5020) enhances skills in integrating digital tools into lessons. This balanced approach ensures graduates are well-prepared to teach ESL effectively in diverse educational settings.
