COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Service Worker diploma program spans four semesters, offering a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for professional roles in human services. In the first semester, students build foundational knowledge through courses such as Human Growth and Behaviour, Reorientation to Human Services, Interpersonal and Group Communication Skills, and Counselling Skills 1, alongside introductory arts and sciences and college writing. The second semester deepens understanding with studies in Sociology, Professional Practice and Field Preparation, Family Dynamics, Counselling Skills 2, and Anti-Oppressive Practice in Social Service Work, complemented by workplace writing skills. In the third semester, students explore Mental Health Foundations, Community Development, Indigenous Studies for Social Service Workers, and Case Management with a focus on advocacy, while gaining practical experience through their first field placement. The final semester emphasizes Agency Administration and Fundraising, Legislation in Human Services, and an Applied Social Service Worker Project, along with a second field placement to solidify hands-on learning. A general elective allows students to tailor their education further. This program blends theory with practical skills, fostering competence in advocacy, counselling, community engagement, and professional practice. Through a mix of classroom learning and extensive field experience, graduates are equipped to work effectively with diverse populations, addressing systemic barriers and promoting social justice in various community and organizational settings.
