COURSE CURRICULUM

The Hearing Instrument Specialist diploma program is structured over four semesters to provide a thorough blend of theoretical knowledge, clinical training, and professional development. In Semester 1, students are introduced to foundational concepts with courses such as Acoustics and Psychoacoustics, Anatomy and Physiology of the Ear, and Fundamental Principles of Audiometry and Hearing Devices. Clinical Theory 1, Interprofessional Education, and College Reading and Writing Skills help build the communication and collaborative skills necessary for health-care environments. Semester 2 advances this foundation with deeper exploration in Advanced Principles of Audiometry and Hearing Devices, Hearing Device Verification, and Patient Counselling Skills, alongside Psychology and Workplace Writing Skills to support effective client interactions. In Semester 3, students engage in more complex content, including Hearing Device Troubleshooting, Hearing Disorders, and Clinical Theory 2. They also study HIS Employment and Public Advocacy, preparing for professional responsibilities, and begin their first Mandatory Professional Practicum, gaining real-world clinical experience. A general elective offers flexibility to explore broader interests. Semester 4 focuses on professional readiness with courses such as Marketing and Business Development, Manufacturer Seminars and Emerging Technologies, and Interprofessional Collaboration. Students also complete their second Mandatory Professional Practicum, applying their skills in a supervised clinical setting. Additional interprofessional education courses further enhance teamwork and communication competencies. Throughout the program, students are equipped to become competent, confident, and compassionate clinicians who are prepared to meet the diverse needs of patients and contribute meaningfully to the hearing health-care field.
