COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma program spans four semesters and is designed to develop students into reflective, responsive, and inclusive professionals equipped to support children from birth to age 12. In Semester 1, foundational knowledge is established through courses such as Responsive Relationships in Inclusive Environments, Children, Play and Creativity, and Child Development: Prenatal to 2½ Years. Students also begin learning about health and safety, observation techniques, and the role of the ECE professional, while strengthening academic skills in College Reading and Writing. Semester 2 introduces Social Justice and Community, Curriculum Design, and Child Development for ages 2 to 6, alongside the first field placement, giving students hands-on experience in early learning settings. A general education course and Workplace Writing Skills further support academic and professional development. Semester 3 deepens the practical experience with Field Experience 2, alongside studies in Inclusive Environments, Family Perspectives, and Land-Based Play guided by Etuaptmumk/Two-Eyed Seeing, an Indigenous worldview. Students continue to explore observational practices and take an additional general elective. In Semester 4, students build leadership and advocacy skills in courses like Community Collaborations and Advocacy and Leadership in ECE, while exploring Child Development for ages 6 to 12. The final field placement consolidates learning, allowing students to integrate theory and practice. The semester concludes with The Reflective Professional, reinforcing the importance of ongoing growth in the ECE field. Two general electives across the final semesters offer broader learning opportunities. Altogether, the program blends academic rigor, hands-on experience, and cultural competence.
