COURSE CURRICULUM

The Developmental Services Worker (DSW) two-year diploma program is structured across four semesters, offering a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and real-world experience. In Semester 1, students are introduced to foundational topics such as Behaviour Supports, Developmental Disabilities, and Supporting Healthy Relationships, while also developing academic and professional skills through courses like College Reading and Writing Skills, Professionalism, and an Introduction to Arts and Sciences. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with a stronger focus on applied learning through the first Field Experience and Seminar course. Students deepen their understanding of the sector with courses in Person-Centred Planning, Responding to Abuse, Health and Wellness, Dual Diagnosis, and Developmental Psychology. In Semester 3, the curriculum addresses more complex topics including Autism and Other Complex Needs, Sign Language and Augmentative Communication, and Community Building. Technical knowledge is further strengthened with courses in Basic Pharmacology 1, Intervention Techniques 2, and Helping Skills, while written communication is enhanced through Workplace Writing Skills. Students also select a General Education elective to broaden their academic perspective. Semester 4 focuses on consolidating learning through the second Field Experience and Seminar, allowing students to apply their skills in real-world settings. Additional coursework in Health and Wellness 2 and Basic Pharmacology 2 further prepares graduates for supporting individuals with a wide range of physical, emotional, and developmental needs. With a total of 600 hours of field placement integrated into the program, students graduate well-equipped for professional roles in the developmental services sector.
