COURSE CURRICULUM

The Personal Support Worker certificate program is structured over two semesters, providing a well-rounded education that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for a career in health care. In Semester 1, students begin with IPE 101: Interprofessional Education, which explores the roles and responsibilities within health-care teams, fostering collaboration and understanding. PSW 151: Applying Mobility Techniques teaches safe and effective methods to assist clients with movement, while PSW 152: Providing Personal Care focuses on the theory and application of daily personal care tasks. PSW 154: Human Development and Family Dynamics Across the Lifespan provides insight into the physical, emotional, and social development of individuals at different life stages, and PSW 159: Communication and Caregiving develops essential communication skills for building trust and providing compassionate support. WRIT 100: College Reading and Writing Skills helps enhance literacy skills vital for documentation and professional communication. In Semester 2, students advance their learning with courses like PSW 161: Assisting with Mental Health and Psychological Disorders and PSW 162: Assisting with Common Health Conditions, broadening their understanding of client needs. PSW 163: Palliative Care and Career Planning addresses end-of-life care and career development. PSW 164: Household Management, Safety and Assisting with Medications teaches essential skills for supporting clients in managing their homes and medications safely. The program also includes two field experience courses, PSW 167 and PSW 168, providing hands-on training in clinical and community settings. This comprehensive curriculum equips students with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to deliver high-quality care and excel in the personal support worker role.
