COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Laboratory Assistant program is structured into three semesters, combining theoretical coursework with practical training to prepare students for careers in medical laboratories. In Semester 1, students begin with ANAT 105: Anatomy and Physiology for Medical Laboratory Assistants, gaining foundational knowledge of the human body relevant to laboratory work. MLA 100: Specimen Collection and Handling teaches proper techniques for collecting and managing biological samples. MLA 101: Laboratory Tools, Equipment, Safety & Management covers the use and maintenance of lab instruments along with safety protocols. MLA 102: Chemistry for Medical Laboratory Assistants introduces basic chemistry concepts applied in laboratory testing, while MLA 103: Introduction to Medical Laboratory Sciences provides an overview of the field and its practices. In Semester 2, students advance their studies with MLA 150: Clinical Microbiology, focusing on microorganisms and infection control. MLA 151: Cytology and Histology covers the study of cells and tissues, essential for understanding lab diagnostics. MLA 152: Hematology and Transfusion Medicine teaches blood analysis and transfusion procedures. MLA 153: Mathematics for Medical Laboratory Assistants sharpens numerical skills required for lab calculations, and MLA 154: Writing and Communication enhances professional communication abilities. Semester 3 centers on practical experience and exam preparation, with MLA 200: Clinical Practicum providing hands-on training in real healthcare settings under supervision. MLA 201: Certification Exam Prep supports students in preparing for professional certification exams such as those from the MLPAO and CSMLS. This comprehensive curriculum equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and credentials needed to succeed as medical laboratory assistants.
