COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Science – Criminal Justice Honours Degree at Humber is a comprehensive eight-semester program that prepares students to critically examine the criminal justice system from multiple perspectives, with a strong emphasis on equity, ethics, and social change. In the first year, students complete foundational courses in communication, psychology, sociology, and social welfare. The second semester introduces key topics in counselling, group dynamics, ethics, and the Canadian justice system. In the second year, students explore criminology, corrections, mental health, and conflict management, while deepening their understanding of victimology, policing, gender dynamics in justice, and criminal law. The third year builds advanced knowledge in Indigenous justice issues, Canadian law, crime statistics, and sociological theories of crime. Applied learning continues with courses in crime prevention, forensic psychology, and research methods. A key component of the program is the field placement in Semester 6, offering hands-on experience in justice-related settings. In the final year, students undertake a senior thesis across two semesters, studying topics such as systemic discrimination, social policy, psychological approaches to offending, restorative justice, and global justice issues. Throughout the degree, students complete degree breadth electives, engage in interdisciplinary learning, and develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills. Graduates are equipped for careers in law enforcement, social services, policy analysis, corrections, or further academic study.
