COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Science – Addictions and Mental Health program at Humber is structured across eight semesters to provide both theoretical foundations and practical skills necessary for careers in the field. Semester 1 introduces core concepts with courses in academic communication, psychology, sociology, government, and interpersonal communication. In Semester 2, students begin focused studies with foundational courses in addictions and mental health, ethics, counselling theory, group dynamics, and social inclusion. Semester 3 advances into equity, individual counselling, research writing, and includes two breadth electives. Semester 4 explores governance and policy, group counselling, neurophysiology and pharmacology, Indigenous perspectives, and professional practice, along with one elective. In Semester 5, the curriculum deepens with ethical practice, family counselling, issues affecting older adults, and quantitative research methods, plus an elective. Semester 6 emphasizes applied skills with courses in grant writing, community development, case management, and qualitative research, alongside one elective, and includes a field experience placement offering hands-on industry exposure. Semester 7 addresses trauma, contemporary issues, behavioural addictions, and begins the senior thesis seminar, complemented by a breadth elective. The final semester, Semester 8, culminates in advanced clinical counselling, professional development, inter-professional collaboration, the completion of the thesis project, and community practice with a focus on northern and rural settings, plus a final elective. The program ensures students graduate with a well-rounded education, combining academic knowledge, clinical counselling techniques, advocacy, research competencies, and real-world experience to effectively address complex issues in addictions and mental health.
