COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Paralegal Studies program spans eight semesters, offering a comprehensive curriculum that combines legal theory with practical skills essential for a licensed paralegal career. In the first semester, students begin with foundational courses such as Introduction to Canada’s Legal System, Small Claims Court 1, Tort Law, and Introduction to Legal Writing, alongside a Degree Breadth Elective. The second semester builds on this foundation with Small Claims Court 2, Contract Law, Legal Computer Applications, and Legal Research and Writing, plus another elective. Semester three introduces Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Legal History, Administrative Law, and Provincial Offences, with an elective option. In semester four, students study Philosophy of Law, Evidence and the Litigation Process, Tribunal Practices and Procedures, and Residential Landlord and Tenant Law, along with an elective. The fifth semester deepens knowledge with Immigration and Refugee Law, Advocacy, Court and Government Office Administration, Career Development, and Alternative Dispute Resolution, plus an elective. Semester six covers Debtor/Creditor Rights, Advanced Legal Writing, Indigenous Legal Perspectives, Criminal Summary Conviction Procedure, and includes a work experience field placement, complemented by an elective. The seventh semester focuses on Alternative Dispute Resolution: Selected Topics, Legal Accounting, Legal Framework of Paralegal Practice, Ethics and Professional Responsibility, and an elective. Finally, semester eight rounds out the program with Access to Justice, Insurance Law, Practice Management, Employment Law, and a final elective. This well-rounded curriculum equips students with the legal knowledge, practical skills, and professional ethics necessary to succeed in diverse paralegal roles while fostering a broad understanding through interdisciplinary electives.
