COURSE CURRICULUM

Humber’s Bachelor of Industrial Design program offers a comprehensive eight-semester curriculum that blends design theory, technical skills, and hands-on project experience. In Semester 1, students begin with foundational courses including Visual Communications, 2D Design Principles, Concept Modelmaking, History of Design, and Design Studio. Semester 2 builds on these foundations with courses in Technical Drawing, 3D Design Principles, and advanced modelmaking. In Semester 3, the focus shifts to developing digital skills through Computer-Aided Design Studio and Materials and Manufacturing, along with Human Factors and more advanced Design Studio work. Semester 4 continues to deepen design skills through Graphic Design for Industrial Design, further CAD training, and manufacturing materials knowledge. Semester 5 introduces Multimedia Design, Professional Practices, and Interaction Design Studio, with a choice between Product or Transportation Design Studio, while also incorporating research methods. Semester 6 adds Sustainable Design and Entrepreneurship and continues specialization with advanced studios in either Product or Transportation Design, plus an industry field placement to gain real-world experience. Semester 7 focuses on the Senior Level Thesis Project, Design Management, and Design Research, alongside a selected specialization studio which includes the option of Interaction Design. Semester 8 concludes the program with the final phase of the Thesis Project, a course in Professional Practices, and one final specialization studio, selected from Product, Transportation, or Interaction Design. Throughout the program, students also take breadth electives to enhance critical thinking and interdisciplinary knowledge. The curriculum is designed to cultivate professional skills in visual communication, digital design, model-making, and research, all while emphasizing innovation and user-centered problem solving. Specialization pathways allow students to tailor their education to match their career goals in product, transportation, or interaction design, preparing graduates to enter a wide range of industrial design fields with a robust portfolio and industry-relevant experience.
