COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Child and Youth Care degree at Humber is a comprehensive eight-semester program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience needed to work effectively with children, youth, and families. Semester 1 introduces foundational subjects including academic communication, child and youth care, psychology, sociology, and social welfare. Semester 2 builds on this with courses in counselling, child and youth care intervention, group work, professional practice preparation, and child development, plus a degree breadth elective. In Semester 3, students explore community practice in addictions, therapeutic programming, child abuse response, and adolescent development, alongside another elective. Semester 4 deepens learning with approaches to care, intervention techniques, gender and sexuality, mental health, and family dynamics. Semester 5 introduces community work with Indigenous populations, disability studies, and quantitative research methods, along with two electives. In Semester 6, students focus on engagement and participation, anti-racism, qualitative research, and further practice-focused learning, followed by a field experience placement that offers real-world application of their skills. Semester 7 includes the first part of the senior thesis project, program management, advanced counselling, and two electives. The final semester concludes with arts-informed inquiry, trauma response, global perspectives on child and youth care, the second part of the thesis, and a course on children and youth from conflict-affected regions. Throughout the program, students engage in both theoretical and applied learning, using strength-based, anti-oppressive, and anti-racist frameworks. The curriculum emphasizes developmental, preventative, and therapeutic approaches, preparing students for diverse career paths in youth justice, education, advocacy, community development, and beyond. Work-integrated learning and research-focused courses provide a strong foundation for future employment or graduate studies, making graduates of the program well-prepared to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children, youth, and their communities.
