COURSE CURRICULUM

The Architectural Technology – Sustainable Design program offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum focused on sustainable building practices, construction technologies, and energy-efficient design. In Semester 1, students build foundational skills in drafting and design with courses like Autocad 1, Drafting and Detailing: House Design, and Materials and Methods 1: Wood Construction, while also strengthening technical communication and math skills. Semester 2 expands into structural systems with Structures, Materials and Methods 2: Steel & Masonry, and Building Information Modeling 1 (BIM), alongside a focus on the Ontario Building Code. Semester 3 explores innovative materials and systems such as mass timber in Materials and Methods 3, complemented by Building Science and BIM 2, supported by general education electives. In Semester 4, students dive deeper into sustainability with courses like Sustainable Design, Materials and Methods 4: Concrete, and BIM 3, while learning visual presentation tools. Semester 5 introduces complex systems including Environmental Systems, Contract Administration, Architectural Site Planning, and policy-focused courses like RE and Green Building Policies and Programs, with applied skills in deep energy retrofits. In Semester 6, students develop project execution competencies through Estimating, Specification Writing, and Project Management, while expanding their understanding of larger systems in Sustainable Communities, Sustainable Resource Management, and advanced detailing for high-performance building enclosures. This integrated curriculum ensures graduates are equipped with the technical knowledge and sustainability expertise to design, assess, and manage buildings that meet and exceed current environmental and performance standards in alignment with Canada’s 2050 net-zero goals.
