COURSE CURRICULUM

The Recreation Therapy program’s full-time Fall intake is structured over three semesters, beginning with foundational courses in Semester 1 that cover essential topics such as assessment processes, the foundations of recreation therapy, adapted recreation, therapeutic relationships, working with selected populations, and biological sciences relevant to the field, totaling 252 hours. In Semester 2, students deepen their understanding through courses in leisure education, current issues and trends in recreation therapy, organizational leadership, facilitative techniques, research methods, and the nature of disabilities, also totaling 252 hours. These courses build critical knowledge and skills required for effective practice in diverse therapeutic settings. Semester 3 consists of a 560-hour internship, providing students with hands-on, practical experience in real-world environments, allowing them to apply their learned skills and develop professional competencies under supervision. This continuous progression from theory to practice ensures that graduates are well-prepared to deliver client-centered, strength-based recreation therapy services. The total program hours amount to 1,064, combining rigorous academic study with experiential learning opportunities that emphasize leadership, assessment, facilitation, and therapeutic intervention. Students gain comprehensive training to enhance functional abilities and quality of life for diverse populations, readying them for successful careers in recreation therapy.
