COURSE CURRICULUM

The Paralegal program’s full-time Fall intake is structured over three semesters, combining comprehensive coursework with a field placement to prepare students for professional practice. In Semester 1, students complete foundational courses including Legal Accounting, Legal Computer Applications, Communication and Writing, Administrative Law, Introduction to the Canadian Legal System, Legal Research and Writing, and Torts and Contracts, totaling 294 hours. These courses build essential legal knowledge and skills in research, writing, and understanding legal principles. Semester 2 expands on practical legal topics with courses such as Employment Law, Evidence and the Litigation Process, Provincial Offences and Motor Vehicle Offences, Residential Landlord and Tenant Law, Small Claims Court, Tribunal Practice and Procedure, and Ethics and Professional Responsibility, also totaling 294 hours. This semester emphasizes applied law and ethical practice, preparing students to navigate specific legal forums and client representation. Semester 3 focuses on advanced skills and specialized legal areas, including Advocacy, Practice Management and Operating a Small Business, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Criminal Summary Conviction Procedure, WSIB/Insurance Accident Benefits, Immigration and Refugee Law, and Human Rights Law including Indigenous Rights and Legal Issues, totaling 264 hours. In addition, students complete a 240-hour Field Placement that provides invaluable real-world experience within legal settings. Altogether, the program comprises 1,092 hours of instruction and practical training, equipping graduates with the knowledge, skills, and professional experience needed to successfully write the Law Society of Ontario licensing exam and pursue a career as a licensed paralegal.
