COURSE CURRICULUM

Addiction Studies program is structured to build students’ knowledge and skills progressively over three semesters. In Semester 1, students begin with foundational courses including Introduction to Counselling: Motivating People to Change, Group Counselling: Dynamics and Processes, Treatment Modalities in Addictions, Practitioner Skills Development, Introduction and Issues in the Field of Addictions, and Concepts of Chemical Dependency. These courses provide a comprehensive introduction to addiction counselling theories, skills, and chemical dependency concepts, totaling 252 hours. Semester 2 deepens practical and theoretical understanding with courses such as Clinical Applications of Motivational Counselling, Prevention and Education in Addictions, Addictions and Mental Health, Gambling and Other Behavioural Dependencies, Enhanced Therapeutic Approaches in Addictions Counselling, and Best Practices in Supporting Selected Populations. This semester continues with 252 hours of coursework, emphasizing specialized counselling techniques and prevention strategies tailored to diverse client needs. Semester 3 is dedicated entirely to an internship through the Addictions Consolidation course, where students complete 495 hours of hands-on fieldwork. This practicum experience allows students to apply their learning in real-world settings under professional supervision, solidifying their readiness for employment in the addiction services field. Overall, the program consists of 999 total hours and is designed to prepare graduates with the essential knowledge, counselling skills, and practical experience necessary for client-centered addiction treatment and support.
