COURSE CURRICULUM

The Addictions and Mental Health program consists of nine specialized courses and one internship designed to prepare students for professional roles in addiction support and mental health services. The program provides a strong foundation in counselling techniques, behavioural health, and client-centered care. Students begin by studying group counselling dynamics and processes, which helps them understand effective communication, teamwork, and therapeutic group interactions. Courses in practitioner skills development focus on building professional counselling competencies, ethical practice, and interpersonal skills required in the field. Students also explore the concepts of chemical dependency, gaining knowledge about substance use disorders, causes of addiction, and recovery processes. Additional courses examine gambling and other behavioural dependencies, allowing students to understand non-substance-related addictions and their impact on individuals and families. Motivational counselling training equips students with strategies to encourage positive behavioural change and support clients through recovery journeys. The program also addresses current issues and emerging trends in the field of addictions, helping students stay informed about modern treatment approaches and social challenges. An internship preparation course ensures students are ready for practical workplace experience, where they can apply their theoretical knowledge and counselling skills in real-world addiction and mental health settings.
