COURSE CURRICULUM

The Power Engineering Technology (Co-op) program is structured over five semesters, offering a comprehensive blend of theoretical and practical learning designed to prepare students for careers in power plant operations. In Semester 1, students build foundational knowledge with courses in chemistry, electricity and controls, power engineering sciences, welding, and introductory power plant simulation and communications, totaling 350 hours. Semester 2 focuses on power plant operations, prime movers, advanced simulation labs, refrigeration and air conditioning, and communication skills, with 364 hours of instruction. Semester 3 advances students’ expertise with courses in thermodynamics, process controls, power plant piping, power engineering math and mechanics, and technical communication, comprising 336 hours. Semester 4 deepens skills through advanced power plant operations, troubleshooting, pumps and compressors, clean energy, applied chemistry, electricity, and project management, totaling 350 hours. The final semester includes advanced refrigeration, prime movers, machine shop skills, nuclear power, advanced thermodynamics, and a 160-hour work-integrated learning placement, along with a general education course, amounting to 402 hours. A co-op work term of 560 hours follows after Semester 2, providing valuable industry experience. In total, the program offers 1,802 hours of academic instruction plus 560 hours of co-op work, ensuring students graduate with nationally recognized certifications, practical skills, and real-world experience essential for success as certified power engineers.
