COURSE CURRICULUM

The Opticianry program follows a full-time course sequence beginning in the Fall and consists of 1,344 academic hours and 1,000 co-operative education hours, providing students with both theoretical knowledge and extensive hands-on experience. In Semester 1, students complete 336 hours covering foundational topics such as eyeglass and contact lens dispensing, fabrication and customization, ocular science, applied optics, and ethics, along with a communication and general education course. Semester 2 includes 322 hours focused on advanced eyeglass and contact lens dispensing labs and theory, ocular sciences, applied optics, business practices, and another general education course. Semester 3 builds on prior learning with 350 hours covering professional services, refraction theory and labs, low vision support, and continued development in eyeglass and contact lens dispensing and customization, along with an additional general education course. Semester 4 consists of 336 hours dedicated to advanced contact lens and eyeglass theory and labs, applied optics, refraction, low vision dispensing, and a consolidation prep course. Two co-op work terms, each 500 hours, occur after Semester 2 and Semester 4, providing valuable real-world industry experience. This well-rounded program prepares students to write the NACOR licensing exams and pursue careers as Registered Opticians across Canada. For other intakes, contact the program coordinator.
