COURSE CURRICULUM

The program is structured over four semesters, providing a comprehensive progression of courses designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills needed for a career as a law clerk. In the first semester, students are introduced to foundational concepts including organizational behaviour, microcomputer applications, the Canadian legal system, legal office administration, and an overview of substantive branches of law, alongside a communications course, totaling 252 hours. The second semester builds on this foundation with courses in family law, debtor and creditor and landlord and tenant law, intermediate legal office administration, and legal research and writing, supplemented by a communications course and a general education course, amounting to 252 hours. Semester three focuses on more advanced legal topics such as family law, corporate and commercial law, real estate law, advanced legal office administration, and civil litigation, along with a general education course, again totaling 252 hours. The final semester emphasizes specialized areas including estates law, corporate and commercial law, civil litigation, real estate law, and legal professionalism and ethics. This semester also includes a field placement component where students gain hands-on experience in a legal environment, as well as a general education course, together amounting to 336 hours. Overall, the program totals 1,092 hours of instruction and practical learning, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to work independently under the supervision of lawyers, proficient in drafting legal documents, handling diverse legal matters, and using current legal software with a strong foundation in legal principles, ethics, and professional conduct.
