COURSE CURRICULUM

The Interior Decorating program is structured across four semesters, offering students a comprehensive mix of theoretical, technical, and hands-on learning experiences. In the first semester, students are introduced to the foundations of design through courses such as Hand Drafting and Design Technology, Drawing and Rendering, Early Design History, and Studio Basics. These are complemented by a course on Sustainable Materials, Finishes, and Furnishings and a communications course selected from a curated list. In the second semester, students build on these foundations with training in Computer Aided Drafting, Interior Decorating Studio, and courses that explore global issues and materials, finishes, and furnishings. History of Furniture deepens their understanding of historical influences on interior design, while communications and general education courses further develop their critical thinking and professional communication skills.The third semester shifts to more advanced skills with Intermediate Computer Aided Drafting, Interior Decorating Studio Intermediate, and a focus on presentation methods, materials, and professional practices. Students also explore applied studio work, allowing for integration of design theory into practical projects. A general education course continues to broaden their educational experience. In the final semester, students complete Advanced Computer Aided Drafting and Interior Decorating Studio Advanced, while also studying advanced professional practices and sales and merchandising strategies—essential skills for business success in the industry. A final general education course is included to round out their academic journey. A key capstone component of the program is the 98-hour Field Placement, which provides students with valuable real-world experience in a professional decorating setting. Across all four semesters, the curriculum totals 1106 hours and is carefully designed to prepare graduates with the creative, technical, and professional skills needed to succeed in residential, commercial, or retail decorating roles, or to launch their own decorating business.
