COURSE CURRICULUM

The Child and Youth Care program follows a structured course sequence designed to prepare students for professional roles supporting children, youth, and families across various care settings. In Semester 1, students build foundational skills through courses such as Child and Youth Care Practice, Child and Adolescent Development, Interpersonal Skills, and Success in Human Services, along with communications and general education electives. Semester 2 expands on therapeutic knowledge with courses like Mental Health and Interventions, Equity and Inclusion, Group Process, Counselling on the Go, and Holistic Health and Wellness. In Semester 3, students explore Family Dynamics, Ethics and Professionalism, Behaviour Interventions, and digital influences on youth, supported by additional general education. Semester 4 introduces field experience through Field Placement 1 (Education/Community) and related seminar courses, along with training in trauma-informed crisis interventions and group facilitation. Semester 5 deepens practical learning with a second placement (Education/Agency/Community), accompanied by a seminar focused on documentation and a course in advocacy. The final semester culminates in the CYC Capstone course and a third field placement (Agency/Community), paired with a seminar preparing students for employment. The comprehensive 1904-hour program blends academic, practical, and field-based learning to ensure students graduate with strong professional competence.
