COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anishnaabemowin Language Program spans four semesters and totals 1,344 hours, offering a structured and immersive learning experience for students dedicated to language revitalization. In Semester 1, students begin with foundational courses such as History of Anishnaabemowin, Writing Systems, Verbs and Nouns 1, and Language in the Home, supported by an Anishnaabemowin lab (Anishnaabemdaa 1) and a communications course, along with Indigenous Heritage, Tradition and Culture, totaling 336 hours. Semester 2 builds on this base with Language in the Community, Verbs and Nouns 2, Anishnaabemowin Resources 1, and Interactive Anishnaabemowin, complemented by Anishnaabemdaa 2, a workplace communication course (COMM 2017), and a general education elective. In Semester 3, students deepen their knowledge through courses like Kinoomaadwin 1, Language Preservation and Revitalization, Language Placement 1, Language in the Workplace, and Anishnaabemowin Structures, alongside Anishnaabemdaa 3 and another general education course. The final semester focuses on advanced language application and sustainability through Anishnaabemowin Resources 2, Language in the Natural Environment, Language Placement 2, Anishnaabemowin Program Development, Kinoomaadwin 2, and Anishnaabemdaa 4, plus a final general education elective. This progression equips students with the practical language skills, cultural insight, and program development knowledge needed to support and lead Anishnaabemowin revitalization efforts in diverse Indigenous communities.
