COURSE CURRICULUM

The Welding Techniques program is structured to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of welding and metal fabrication. Designed for full-time study beginning in the Fall, the program spans two semesters and totals 644 hours. In Semester 1, students begin with the core fundamentals including trade calculations for welders, metallurgy for welding, and welding and cutting processes, equipping them with essential technical knowledge. Safety and workplace practices are emphasized through the trades practice and safety course. Blueprint reading for metal trades ensures students can accurately interpret technical drawings, an essential skill in welding and fabrication industries. The hands-on portion begins with practical courses such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) basics and gas metal arc welding (GMAW), allowing students to build proficiency using industry-standard equipment and techniques. Semester 2 builds on these skills with more advanced courses including layout and fabrication, shielded metal arc welding intermediate, flux core arc welding/metal core arc welding, and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). This semester also integrates a communications course and a general education course to enhance workplace communication and critical thinking abilities. By the end of the program, students are well-prepared to test for Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certification, depending on their demonstrated skill level. The program provides a pathway into entry-level positions in welding across industries such as manufacturing, construction, and custom fabrication.
