COURSE CURRICULUM

The Veterinary Assistant certificate program at Georgian College is structured over two semesters and is offered through a Winter intake. The curriculum is designed to prepare students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience required to work effectively in veterinary clinics, hospitals, shelters, and other animal care environments. In Semester 1, students build foundational competencies through courses such as Front Office and Reception 1, which introduces basic administrative and client service responsibilities, and Clinical Procedures 1, where students begin developing essential hands-on animal care skills. Additional courses include Laboratory Procedures and Radiography, which provides exposure to diagnostic tools and imaging techniques, and Veterinary Anatomy, Physiology and Diseases, which helps students understand the structure and function of animals and common health conditions. Courses in medical terminology and academic success strategies support overall preparedness. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with more advanced practical training. Students explore Pharmacology for Veterinary Assistants, which introduces medication handling and safety, and Clinical Procedures 2, where hands-on animal care continues with greater complexity. Courses in Surgical Assisting and Kennel and Hospital Duty offer immersive training in surgical preparation, post-operative care, and facility hygiene. A second course in Front Office and Reception further develops communication and client service proficiency. Students also complete general education and communications courses to broaden their professional skills. The combination of lecture-based and lab-based learning—including time spent in Georgian’s on-site veterinary hospital—ensures graduates are job-ready, with experience in both animal care and veterinary office operations. This 518-hour program provides a comprehensive overview of the veterinary assistant role and serves as a strong foundation for entering the animal care field or pursuing further education in veterinary technology.
