COURSE CURRICULUM

The Art and Design Fundamentals program is structured to provide students with a strong foundational understanding of visual arts, preparing them for advanced study or entry into creative fields. The program follows a planned course sequence for full-time students beginning in the Fall intake. In Semester 1, students engage in a core set of courses that introduce fundamental principles of art and design. These include Ideas and Imagery (APDE 1000), Design Fundamentals (APDE 1001), Colour and Design (APDE 1002), Understanding Art and Design (APDE 1006), and Fundamentals of Drawing (DRWG 1004). In addition to these studio-based courses, students complete a communications course selected from a list available during registration. The first semester totals 252 hours and is designed to build visual literacy, develop technical skills, and foster creativity and problem-solving.In Semester 2, students are given the flexibility to tailor their learning through the selection of five program option courses from a diverse list. These may include Life Drawing, Drawing from Your Imagination, Visual Art Studio: 3D, Fine Art Studio, Graphic Design 1, Interior Design and Interior Decorating Studio, and Jewellery Fabrication 1. These options allow students to explore various creative disciplines and gain exposure to specialized media and techniques. Additionally, students are required to complete one general education course to broaden their academic experience and contextual understanding of art and design. The second semester also totals 252 hours, bringing the program to a cumulative total of 504 instructional hours.This carefully structured curriculum offers both a comprehensive introduction to visual arts and the opportunity for specialization. It ensures that students graduate with a well-rounded portfolio and the foundational knowledge necessary to pursue advanced studies in art and design or explore employment opportunities in creative industries.
