COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Police Studies program at Georgian College offers a comprehensive and academically rigorous pathway for students seeking careers in law enforcement and related justice fields. Spanning eight semesters and including a co-op work term, the program totals 1,680 instructional hours and 560 hours of practical experience. The curriculum begins with foundational courses in police studies, communication, Canadian criminal justice, and diversity, building toward more specialized and analytical topics such as criminal law, police powers, forensic science, youth justice, and criminology. Students also explore key areas including mental health, community policing, traffic law, and ethical reasoning. Integrated throughout the program are interdisciplinary and social science courses to broaden students’ perspectives on the societal context of policing. In the later semesters, advanced topics like criminal procedures, professional standards, human resource management, dispute resolution, and criminal behaviour analysis are explored, alongside a capstone research project. A robust selection of electives—including organized crime, terrorism, cybercrime, forensic techniques, and victimology—allows students to tailor their learning to specific interests. The program includes leadership and management-focused courses, supporting preparation for supervisory or strategic roles in policing. A dedicated co-op term offers valuable workplace experience, helping students apply theory in real-world settings and build professional networks. For those with advanced standing (BAPA stream), the program offers an accelerated completion route focusing on upper-level courses. Throughout, the curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and professionalism aligned with the expectations of modern policing organizations. Graduates are prepared for diverse roles in law enforcement, community safety, criminal investigation, and public service or for continued academic studies.
