COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Interior Design program at Georgian College is structured over eight semesters and one co-op work term, combining creative exploration with technical proficiency and professional preparation. Students complete a total of 2,226 instructional hours and a 560-hour co-op placement. The program begins with foundational courses such as design communications, sustainable practices, and introductory studio work, establishing a strong base in design theory and visual communication. As students progress through each semester, they engage in increasingly complex studio projects and learn to apply design principles to real-world interior environments. Technical courses in building technologies—covering wood frame construction, lighting, electrical systems, steel and masonry, mechanical systems, and advanced interior detailing—equip students with the knowledge to develop structurally sound and code-compliant designs. Digital communications skills are built over seven sequential courses, aligning with industry software and presentation standards. The curriculum includes studies in design history, material culture, ethics, regulatory codes, interdisciplinary practice, and community engagement. Research methods and statistical analysis support evidence-based design processes. A two-part thesis project in the final year enables students to investigate and design a comprehensive solution to a complex interior design challenge, integrating research, innovation, and design integrity. Students also complete non-core electives in interdisciplinary studies and social sciences to broaden their perspectives and contextual understanding of design. A mandatory 560-hour co-op work term provides hands-on industry experience and professional networking opportunities, reinforcing the connection between academic learning and workplace application.
