COURSE CURRICULUM

The Respiratory Therapy program is delivered in a hybrid format over six semesters, combining online and in-person learning. In the first semester, students study foundational courses such as Anatomy & Physiology I, Applied Science for Respiratory Therapists, Medical Gas, RT General Therapeutics I, Concepts in Health Care, and Communications for Health Professionals, totaling 345 hours of instruction. The second semester builds on this foundation with Anatomy & Physiology II, Cardiorespiratory Pathophysiology I, Mechanical Ventilation I, Patient Assessment and Evaluation, RT General Therapeutics II, and an Introduction to Indigenous Studies, providing 345 hours of learning. The third semester covers specialized topics including Blood Gas Analysis, Cardiopulmonary Diagnostics, Cardiorespiratory Pathophysiology II, Concepts of Airway Management, Mechanical Ventilation II, Introduction to Research, plus a General Education elective, totaling 300 hours. Semester four emphasizes professional skills and clinical knowledge with courses in Anesthesia, Health Psychosociology, Introduction to Clinical Practice, Respiratory Care for Neonates and Pediatrics, Respiratory Pharmacology, RT Professional Practice and Ethics, and another General Education elective, amounting to 330 hours. The final two semesters focus on clinical placements, with 500 hours of fieldwork in each semester to develop hands-on experience, complemented by Advanced Practice and Case Studies, and Health Professionals Testing Canada exam preparation. This comprehensive program prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment required to excel in cardio-respiratory care across various healthcare settings, readying graduates to become registered members of the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario.
