COURSE CURRICULUM

The Visual and Creative Arts Diploma (VCAD) at Fleming College offers a dynamic, immersive curriculum designed to develop core artistic skills while fostering creative exploration and professional growth. In the first semester, students engage in foundational studies through courses such as 3D Design – Studio, Design I, Drawing Disciplines, Digital Media, and Media Explorations I. These hands-on courses are complemented by academic studies like Art History – The Recent Century and Contemporary Art Investigations, offering context for students’ developing practices. Introduction to Indigenous Studies provides a critical understanding of Indigenous perspectives and their influence on Canadian art and culture. In the second semester, students deepen their practice through Concept Development, a comprehensive course that encourages experimentation, personal expression, and technical refinement. Additional courses such as Design II and Media Explorations II expand visual language and material knowledge, while Portfolio and Presentation prepares students to showcase their work professionally. Business for Artists introduces students to the practical side of creative careers, including marketing, project management, and entrepreneurship. A General Education elective further broadens the student’s educational experience, allowing exploration of diverse academic interests. Together, these two semesters provide a strong foundation in visual arts, blending studio practice, critical thinking, and career preparation. Upon completion, students may pursue one of Fleming’s accelerated studio-based art certificates or transfer to advanced programs through articulation agreements with major Canadian art institutions. Whether aiming for a studio practice, cultural sector role, or creative industry career, the VCAD program prepares students for success in the diverse world of visual arts.
